2020 Annual Meeting Director Election Results
Democracy Practiced While Member Health Protected
On April 23, 2020, UDWI’s members re-elected David Burger (District 1), Todd Carpenter (District 2), and John Royal (District 4) to the Board of Directors. UDWI’s Staff and Directors would like to thank our members for voting at near-record volumes, despite the on-going COVID-19 crisis.
Democratic member control is one of the seven cooperative principals that UDWI REMC was founded upon. In 2020, UDWI’s membership supported this principle by casting a total of 2,148 votes, a 360 vote, or 20%, increase over the 1,788 votes cast in 2019. UDWI continues to have one of the highest member voting rates in the region.
UDWI was one of the first electric cooperatives in Indiana to offer mail-in and internet voting options to its membership. Thankfully, these voting options allowed UDWI to safely hold its annual elections despite Indiana’s stay-at-home order. Many other Indiana electric cooperatives were forced to indefinitely postpone their elections due to the current pandemic. UDWI’s survey reported that 92% of our voting members were very satisfied, or satisfied, with our current voting process.
UDWI is truly blessed to have a membership that cares about the health and safety of their neighbors. Thankfully, our members were able to exercise their democratic rights without risking their health. Let us all pray that this pandemic passes quickly and that we all stay healthy.
